Policy on AI
The policy applies to submissions on or after November 8, 2026. The Bernoulli AI policy will be revisited and subject to change as needed, especially as AI continues to evolve. Authors, reviewers, and editors will find the latest policy on this page.
For Authors
- Only humans may be listed as authors. Authors may use AI tools to assist with preparation of their manuscripts. Authors, however, remain fully responsible for the content of their submissions, including correctness, originality, presentation, and intellectual integrity. Accordingly, authors must carefully verify any AI-assisted material, fully understand the work they submit, and ensure that their manuscripts are comprehensible to human readers.
- Authors must include a statement in the acknowledgments section describing their use of AI tools. The AI disclosure statement should explain whether and how AI tools were used in proof development, writing and exposition, and other supporting tasks, such as numerical experiments and proofreading. Even if no AI tools were used, authors must include an AI statement clarifying this. The acknowledgments section is excluded from the page limit.
- The editorial board has final discretion to determine whether the nature and extent of AI use are acceptable. Severe violations of these guidelines may result in restrictions on future submissions to Bernoulli.
- Bernoulli allows reviewers and editors to use AI tools to assist in checking technical claims, subject to the confidentiality and data-protection safeguards specified below. Authors are encouraged to deposit their manuscripts on public preprint servers, such as arXiv and HAL, before submission. As a condition of submission, authors agree that reviewers and editors may use AI tools to assist in evaluating their manuscripts under these safeguards.
For Reviewers and Editors
- Bernoulli places particular emphasis on the scientific interest of the problem and results, on mathematical and statistical ideas worth understanding and transmitting, and on the quality of exposition.
- At their discretion, reviewers and editors may use AI tools to assist with technical checks, such as examining proofs, verifying references, and checking internal consistency, subject to the confidentiality and data-protection safeguards specified below. However, they must critically evaluate any AI-assisted findings, and their assessments of novelty, importance, scientific interest, and quality of exposition must be grounded in their own expertise. Reviewers remain responsible for the writing of their review reports and making recommendations, while editors remain responsible for editorial decisions and for maintaining the integrity and quality of the review process. Reviewers must specify, in their confidential comments to the editors, which AI tools they used and for what purposes.
- Reviewers and editors must maintain the confidentiality of the review process and comply with applicable legal obligations when using AI tools. Any manuscript material may be shared only with secure or institutionally approved AI tools whose data-control settings adequately prohibit the use of manuscript content for model training. Confidential editorial correspondence and review reports must not be disclosed to external AI services.
