General Announcement

The Award Committee invites nominations for the Bernoulli Society-Royal Statistical Society David G.
Kendall Award for Young Researchers. This biennial award aims to recognize excellent research in
Mathematical Statistics and in Probability Theory. The award is in honor of David G. Kendall, who was
the first president of the Bernoulli Society, and was awarded the Guy Medal in Silver (1955) and in
Gold (1981) of the RSS.

The 2023 edition of the award is organized for young researchers in Mathematical Statistics. The
award consists of the prize amount of 2000€ together with an award certificate. The winner will
deliver the Kendall Lecture during the RSS International Conference 2024. The award should be used
to cover the expenses of attendance at this conference.
Nominees should be researchers with significant achievements and great potential in their research
field, who obtained their PhD after January 1 st , 2015 (up to a year’s credit will be given for each year
taken out due to parental circumstances since receiving the PhD at the committee’s discretion).
Nominees must be members of either the Bernoulli Society or the Royal Statistical Society.
Nominations should be communicated to the Award Committee by sending an email to

and be signed by two members of the BS or the RSS. They must include the name, affiliation, and
brief curriculum vitae (including a list of publications) of the nominee, a statement of no more than
100 words summarising the case for nomination, a list of the best three articles, and a review of no
more than two pages of the nominee's research contributions.
The members of the 2023 Award Committee are

Aad van der Vaart (BS, Chair)
Sara van de Geer (BS)
Charles Taylor (RSS)
Almut Veraart (RSS)

The nomination process is open from 1 April 2023 and closes on 30 June 2023.
The award recipient will be announced in December 2023.

The deadline for submission of contributed papers for the Conference on Stochastic Processes and their Applications 2023 to take place July 24-28 in Lisbon, Portugal has been prolonged till April 30th, 2023. See https://www.spa2023.org/abstractsubmission .

The deadlines for submission of contributed papers and early bird payment for the European Meeting of Statisticians 2023 to take place July 3-7 in Warsaw, Poland, have been prolonged (till March 31st and May 5th, 2023, respectively). See https://ems2023.org/important_dates .

The annual meeting of officials of the Bernoulli Society and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics was organized on September 6th, 2022,  on zoom platform and with kind support of Elyse Gustafson. The IMS was represented by Peter Bühlman (President) and Krzysztof Burdzy (Past President).  The author of this note was the only representative of the BS, as Victor Panaretos (President-Elect) had to chair an ad-hoc celebration organized by his mother institution (Institute of Mathematics, EPFL)  to honor Maryna Viazovska,  the Fields Medalist 2022.

During the discussion we exchanged impressions on recent conferences organized in person, not in hybrid or online modes. Among several topics one was particularly dominating and the Presidents decided to give a special wording to it.

The World Congress itself should be held in person. Keynote speakers are expected to give their lectures in person. If a keynote speaker cannot attend in person, the lecture will be rescheduled.

Bernoulli Society and IMS call for preliminary bids/expressions of interest from academics interested in running a Bernoulli-IMS World Congress at their institution in 2028. The deadline for submission is March 31st, 2023. The location of the 2028 meeting will be announced during the11th Bernoulli-IMS World Congress in Probability and Statistics in Bochum in 2024.

The bids should be sent to the two society presidents

  • Peter Bühlmann <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.;

and copied to the two society presidents-elect

The winners of the New Researcher Award 2023 in Mathematical Statistics are:

  • Edgar Dobriban (University of Pennsylvania)
  • Qiyang Han (Rutgers University)
  • Lucas Janson (Harvard University)

The awardees will deliver a talk at the special invited session during the ISI World Statistics Congress Conference to be held in Ottawa, Canada, July 15 – 20, 2023, and will each receive a funding up to 1000 € to offset travel and other expenses.

The committee also honors three additional applicants:

The Bernoulli Society is sponsoring the first International Day for Women in Statistics and Data Science (IDWSDS), an initiative from the Caucus for Women in Statistics (CWS) and the Portuguese Statistical Association (SPE). The online event will take place on October 11, 2022. There will be a place for both live and recorded presentations, in the spirit of the first Around the World conference

The aim includes showcasing women's contributions to the field and connecting women statisticians and data scientists around the world. This is in line with other recent initiatives designed to increase women in STEM disciplines, such as the International Day for Women in Mathematics, and ISI’s International Year of Women in Statistics and Data Science

In reaction to the military aggression by the Russian Federation, the Executive Committee of the Bernoulli Society, in consultation with the European Regional Committee, has decided to cancel the European Meeting of Statisticians 2022 in Moscow. We appreciate the significant efforts that have been invested in the preparation of this meeting. We express our deepest sympathy and support to the Ukrainian people.
