1.- GENERAL NEWS

* The Council of the Bernoulli Society approved the candidates for President-Elect 2011-2013 and ordinary Council members for 2011-2015 presented by the Nominating Committee.  The Council provided no additional candidates.  Since there is only one candidate for an office, according to the Statutes, the candidates shall be declared elected in the General Assembly during the Dublin ISI World Statistics Congress in August 2011.

* The next Ordinary Meeting of the Bernoulli Society General Assembly (GA) will take place at the ISI Dublin WSC on Thursday 25 of August, 2011, from 13.00 to 15.00 hrs. Those members participating in this Congress please write it down in your agenda. All members are welcome  to make suggestions for the Open Floor Discussion part of this GA. Please contact any member of the Bernoulli Society Executive Committee.

*  New international web-based mentor programme for Ph.D students in statistics and probability at universities in developing countries is launched, sponsored by the International Statistical Institute and the Bernoulli Society. Ph.D students enrol the programme by internet and are put in contact with volunteer senior statisticians. The programme is based in Oslo, see http://statmentoring.nr.no to find out more on what the programme does. 4.- CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR DOEBLIN AND OUTSTANDING

SURVEY ARTICLE IN PROBABILITY PRIZES

* WOLFGANG DOEBLIN PRIZE 2012

 

The Bernoulli Society welcomes nominations for the first Wolfgang Doeblin Prize to be awarded in the 8th World Congress in Probability and Statistics in Istanbul, 2012.

The Prize is to honour the scientific work of Wolfgang Doeblin. It will be awarded for outstanding work in the field of probability, to a single individual who is at the beginning of his or her mathematical career.

The Wolfgang Doeblin Prize is generously supported by Springer. The awardee will be invited to submit to the journal Probability Theory and Related Fields a paper for publication as the Wolfgang Doeblin Prize Article, and will also be invited to present a Doeblin Prize Lecture in a later Conference on Stochastic Processes and their Applications.

* BERNOULLI PRIZE FOR OUTSTANDING SURVEY ARTICLE IN

PROBABILITY

The Bernoulli Society has initiated a new prize to recognize an

outstanding survey article in probability. The award is biennial, the

first of which  to be presented at the Bernoulli World Congress in the

Summer of 2012.  (Watch for later news about a companion biennial

award in 2014 for mathematical statistics.)

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: According to the award specifications,

nominations exclude self-nominations,  and can otherwise be

submitted to the  committee chair

Nominations should include full name and email address of both the

nominee and nominator, as well as a pdf  file of the published article.

Nominations should be submitted by NOVEMBER 30, 2011.
